Shooting – Summer Games 2024

There are three different types of events at the Summer Games: rifle, pistol, and shotgun. Rifle and pistol events take place on shooting ranges, where competitors aim at targets
at distances of 10m, 25m and 50m. There are also three positions: kneeling (where the competitor goes down on one knee and rests the elbow on the other knee), prone and standing, while some events include all positions. In the Shotgun events there are two types of events, Trap and Skeet. In Trap events, athletes shoot at clay targets moving away from them, launched from a trap pit, while in Skeet events the targets fly across the athlete’s front, launched from huts on their left and right. A mixed Skeet team event will make its entrance for the first time at the Paris 2024 Summer Games.

Precision and Rapid Fire:

Shooting events require a combination of precision and rapid-fire skills. Athletes compete in events like 10m air rifle, 50m rifle, 25m rapid fire pistol, and trap shooting, among others.

Did you know that..

  1. Shooting is a sport that encompasses a wide range of disciplines, including rifle, pistol, and shotgun events. Each discipline has its own set of rules, distances, and challenges, providing a diverse array of competitions within the sport.

  2. Shooting places a strong emphasis on precision and accuracy. Competitors aim to hit targets with exceptional accuracy, whether they are shooting stationary targets in events like 10m air rifle or moving targets in shotgun events like trap shooting.

  3. Shooters employ various shooting positions, including standing, kneeling, and prone positions, depending on the discipline. Each position requires a unique combination of stability, control, and focus to achieve accurate shots.

  4. Shooting has been a part of the modern Summer Games since their inception in 1896. It is one of the oldest Summer Games sports and has featured consistently in the program, with both individual and team events for men and women.

  5. The inclusion of mixed-gender events in shooting reflects the ongoing efforts to promote gender equality in the Games. Events like the 10m air rifle mixed team and the 10m air pistol mixed team allow male and female shooters to compete together.
