Basketball 3x3 – Summer Games 2024

Basketball 3x3 was one of the most recent events to be added to the Games program in 2021 in Tokyo. The 3x3 match format is very different to normal basketball.

Three players per team compete using the same basket and shots made outside the line count for two points, while shots inside are only worth one. The winning team is the first to reach 21 points or the one leading the scoring after ten minutes of play.

Did you know that..

1. 3x3 basketball is a variation of traditional basketball played with three players on each team. The game is played on a half-court, and teams score points by shooting the ball into a single basket.

2. 3x3 basketball made its first appearance at the Summer Games in Tokyo 2020. It was introduced as part of efforts to make the Summer Games more dynamic, engaging, and appealing to younger audiences.

3. In the Summer Games program, both men's and women's 3x3 basketball events take place. The competition features national teams from around the world competing for gold, silver, and bronze medals.

4. 3x3 basketball is known for its fast-paced and intense nature. With only six players on the court (three per team), the game encourages quick plays, agility, and skillful maneuvers.

5. The scoring system is different from traditional basketball. Baskets made inside the arc are worth one point, while shots beyond the arc earn two points. Free throws are also awarded differently, with teams shooting from a set distance.
