Stadium Guide

The Experience

Opened in 2002 as the first NFL stadium with a retractable roof — a crucial feature for Houston's climate. Part of the NRG Park complex including NRG Arena and NRG Center. Over 600 major events hosted. A proven venue for international soccer, two Super Bowls, and NCAA Final Fours.

Inside

The Stadium

  • First NFL stadium with a retractable roof — opens and closes depending on weather; climate-controlled when closed, making Houston's heat and humidity a non-factor for World Cup June fixtures
  • 1.9 million square feet — four massive concourse levels for events, extensive club meeting spaces and catered function areas
  • Natural grass that can be moved outside for sunlight when the roof is closed — unique maintenance system in the NFL
  • Four suite levels (100, 200, 400, 800) across the facility — varied capacities from intimate to large corporate groups
  • BullPen section (117–118) in the north endzone — known for the most passionate Texans atmosphere; player entry tunnels in northeast and northwest corners
  • Metro Rail (METRORail) connects directly to NRG Park from downtown Houston
Day Of

Arrive Ready

  • 90 minutes early for Texans games — 90–120 minutes for World Cup fixtures with international crowds and expanded security
  • METRORail Red Line connects directly to NRG Park from downtown Houston — the most reliable transit option; avoids all parking congestion
  • Retractable roof means Houston's heat and humidity are managed when closed — confirm roof status for your match-day fixture in advance
  • NRG Park parking rates from $25 — pre-purchase recommended, no in-and-out access; electronic/card payment required at gates
  • FIFA Fan Festival at East Downtown will host free screenings and events across all 39 days of the tournament — plan arrival with this in mind

Matchday

Inside the Stadium

What to know before you arrive.

Roof & Climate
Retractable — Houston Heat Managed
NRG Stadium's retractable roof was the first in the NFL and was designed specifically for Houston's climate. When closed, the stadium is climate-controlled — eliminating the heat and humidity that make outdoor summer events in Houston challenging. Five of the seven World Cup matches kick off at noon CT, when Houston temperatures in June can be in the 90s°F. Confirm roof status for your specific match-day in advance — this is one of the most weather-significant planning decisions at any venue in this series.
Parking
$25+ Per Space — No In-and-Out
NRG Park parking is $25+ per space at the gate, subject to change. No in-and-out access once parked. Electronic or card payment required at all parking gates. ADA parking available throughout NRG Park on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-purchase any available passes for World Cup fixtures — METRORail is the recommended alternative to avoid parking entirely.
Fan Festival
East Downtown — All 39 Tournament Days
The FIFA Fan Festival at East Downtown Houston runs across all 39 days of the World Cup tournament — free live match screenings, cultural programming, food and beverage throughout. The Netherlands' official fan club (Het Oranje Legioen) is planning a mass fan walk to the stadium from the city for the June 20 fixture. Plan arrival time around any fan walk or city-side events on your match day.
Getting Here

Transit, Parking
& Entry

METRORail Red Line connects directly to NRG Park from downtown — the most reliable option for avoiding parking and traffic. Both Houston airports are practical arrival points for fly-in groups.

METRORail
Red Line — Direct to NRG Park
METRORail Red Line connects downtown Houston directly to NRG Park station — the most reliable arrival method for groups staying in the downtown or Midtown area. Service runs frequently on event days. The cleanest way to avoid NRG Park's no-return parking policy and post-match road congestion.
Parking
$25+ Per Space — Pre-Purchase Advised
Extensive NRG Park parking surrounds the stadium — pre-purchase passes where available. $25+ per space at the gate; rates subject to change. No in-and-out — plan to stay for the full event. Card/electronic payment only. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) designated zones available; pre-book return trip before entering the stadium.
Airports
IAH ~25 Min · HOU ~15 Min
George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) is ~25 minutes from the stadium — Houston's main international hub with the broadest route coverage. William P. Hobby (HOU) is ~15 minutes away and is the more convenient airport for domestic arrivals, particularly Southwest Airlines traffic. Both connect to downtown Houston, from where METRORail provides stadium access.

NRG Stadium is south of downtown Houston — four zone options from the METRORail-connected hotel corridor to the Galleria's upscale shopping district.

Best Transit Access

Museum District / Hermann Park

Immediately north of NRG Park and served by METRORail — the most walkable neighbourhood to the stadium and home to the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Museum of Fine Arts, and Hermann Park's Japanese Garden. The best combination of proximity and neighbourhood character.

Most Upscale

Galleria / Uptown

Houston's premier shopping and luxury hotel district — strongest concentration of high-end properties in the city. ~20–25 min from NRG Stadium by rideshare. Best for groups who want upscale hotel access and don't need to be on the METRORail corridor.

Houston — Beyond the Match

Space Center Houston is 30 minutes south — one of the great science attractions in the US and unlike anything available near any other World Cup venue. The Museum District clusters 19 museums within walking distance of each other, including the Houston Museum of Natural Science and the Menil Collection. Houston's food scene is among the most diverse and underrated in America — Vietnamese on Bellaire, Tex-Mex citywide, and a James Beard-level restaurant scene centred in Montrose and the Heights.

FAQ

Common Questions

First-time visitor answers, plainly stated.

Likely yes for the five noon kickoffs in June — Houston in June regularly hits 90–95°F with high humidity, which makes opening the roof impractical for player welfare and spectator comfort. The exact roof decision is made per-match by venue management in coordination with FIFA. We'll confirm this closer to the tournament. The retractable roof and climate control are exactly why NRG was chosen as a host — it's the practical solution to hosting a major international event in a Houston summer.

METRORail Red Line to NRG Park station — direct from downtown and Midtown, fast, and avoids parking entirely. This is the recommended option for any group staying in the downtown or Midtown hotel corridor. For the Galleria or Uptown area, rideshare is practical at 20–25 minutes. Note that NRG Park parking has no in-and-out access, so METRORail is also the best option for groups who want flexibility during the match.

No — 100 Level suites are only available for Texans NFL games and are removed for all secondary events, including World Cup 2026. The 200 Level is the closest suite tier to the field available for World Cup fixtures. The 200 Level also includes VIP parking passes, which are the most practical premium add-on given NRG Park's no-return parking policy.

FIFA assigns group-stage matches to venues based on stadium capacity, infrastructure, and regional geography — NRG Stadium qualified on all criteria. Germany (Group E), Portugal twice (Group K), and the Netherlands (Group F) were drawn to groups whose matches were assigned to the Houston venue. Houston's diverse international population also makes it a culturally appropriate city for European and global football fanbases. The Netherlands' official supporter group is already planning a major fan walk to the stadium.

Yes — Houston is one of the most underrated major American cities for first-time visitors. Space Center Houston is genuinely one of the best science attractions in the country. The Museum District clusters nearly 20 museums within walking distance. The food scene is exceptional and extraordinarily diverse — Vietnamese, Tex-Mex, Gulf seafood, and a serious fine-dining scene all within the city. Two days is the minimum to get the real picture; three is better.
