What's Special About the NBA All-Star Game

The NBA All-Star Game isn't like your typical big sports event, and especially not like your typical basketball game. Here are the things that make travel to the NBA All-Star Game worth it, and why you should consider going to it this upcoming year.

THE TEAMS ARE SPECIALLY DRAFTED

Although the NBA has different teams based on different regions similar to the NFL-- the NBA All-Star game isn't based off those groups. The players in each team are a mix of the league's best players, drafted by the two best stars with the most votes. Players then travel to the NBA All-Star game from all around the country to play. In 2022, these teams were divided by team Lebron James, and Kevin Durant-- household names popular even among non-basketball fans. The starting lineup is also selected based off a mix of fan, player, and media voting.

THERE'S A LONGER, MORE EVENTFUL HALFTIME SHOW

Halftime shows during the NBA All-Star Game are longer than usual, and contain the biggest stars the NBA can get a hold of. Although nothing has been announced yet of the 2023 halftime show, past halftime events have included performers like Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, and Elton John.

PLAYERS CHANGE UP THEIR STYLE

The All-Star game usually ends up with a much higher score than the average NBA game. This is both because of the higher-caliber players, and because they change the tradition a little. Sometimes, players start from unique positions, and usually, they go through extra effort to do tricks like slam dunks and alley oops. It's difficult not to be entertained by the madness going on during these games, even if you're not a big basketball fan.

THERE'S A TON OF FAN FARE

The NBA All-Star Game is the featured event of the NBA All-Star Weekend, in which an entire NBA festival spans Friday through Sunday, catering to the fans with multiple unique events and performances. There's an NBA Jam Session, which is often called a basketball theme park, and contests and challenges that NBA players of past, present, and celebrities from sports and entertainment show off their skills together.
