U.S. Open Golf
JUNE 10 - 16, 2019
The US Open Golf tournament is one of the four major PGA tour events of the year. Played every June, one of the main reason golf fans attend the US Open is because the tournament rotates around the country. For fans that attend most years, it gives them the opportunity to experience a variety of American cities and golf courses. In 2019, the beautiful Pebble Beach/Monterey will host the tournament. Currently played as the second major tournament after April's Masters, the US Open will become third major event in 2019 as the calendar gets a makeover. Unlike other PGA major tournaments, the US Open brings together 156 professional and amateur golfers. Before the tournament tees off in June, amateurs from around the country attempt to qualify through regional and sectional tournaments. The US Open is unique in that it allows fans to see future stars before they make it big as amateur players live out a dream scenario in which they could walk away with a major PGA tour trophy. Players will play among the glistening coastline of Pebble Beach Golf Links on June 13th through the 16th with practice rounds on June 10th-12th.

Furthermore, each hole on Pebble Beach is loaded with historical shots and moments from Bing Crosbys to U.S. Amateurs. Walking among golf history, looking out over cliffs that line Stillwater Cove and the white sands of Carmel Beach, Pebble Beach Golf Links will be a dream vacation and a dream sports event. Taking place at America’s No. 1 public course, the 2019 US Open will be a major event at a scenic location that golfers and golf fans alike won’t want to miss.
U.S. OPEN HISTORY:
The US Open golf tournament was first played in 1895. The inaugural tournament was far different than today's major event. It was originally played in October and it was contested on a nine-hole golf course. The first tournament had just one amateur player in the field. Ten professionals rounded out the 11 players who contested the first US Open.
It wasn't until the early 1900s that the US Open became a major golf event. In 1913, the tournament was put on the map when American amateur Francis Ouimet defeated a field of professionals. The popularity of the tournament began to rise thanks to Ouimet's win.
Despite Ouimet’s famous triumph, the 1933 US Open was the last time an amateur won the event when John Goodman lifted the famous sports trophy. It has now been 84 years since the last amateur won the tournament.
The US Open continues to hold a special place in the hearts and minds of golf fans. Although it has been 84 tournaments since an amateur last won, the belief that it could happen all over again leaves fans with great anticipation for the event each year. At the 2018 event, fans got to see winner Brooks Koepka shine as he became the first man since Curtis Strange in 1989 to defend his U.S. Open Championship title. Will he be able to win a third consecutive USGA Open Championship or will a newcomer take his place? There’s only one way to find out.
