With construction beginning in late 2016, architect Zaha Hadid embarked upon Tokyo’s journey to reconstruct a new National Olympic Stadium. The stadium is set to be completed by the end of 2019, just in time for the 2020 Summer Games in July. Though many of the original plans, such as the retractable roof, were scrapped due to time and budget restrictions, the sleek, steel arch design is still underway. Capacity during the Games will be 60,102 and the brand new venue will host the opening ceremonies on July 24 and the closing ceremonies on August 9, 2020.
