Hosted for the first time in Japan since 1964, the 2020 Summer Games will be an event you won't want to miss. The 2016 Games were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and this time around, the games will take place in Tokyo, Japan. In each event, a gold medal is awarded for first place, silver for second and bronze medals for third place. Over the years, the games have increased from a 42-event competition with 14 competing nations to 306 events with 206 competing nations. 19 different countries have hosted the Summer Games and the 2020 Games will mark the second time for Japan. This will make Japan the first country outside of the Western world to host the Summer Games more than once.

Hosted by a different city every four years, the Summer Games are watched intently across the world. In 2020, the Games make their way to Tokyo for the 2nd time in Olympic history. Here’s what you need to know about what to expect and how you can experience it live.
Forty-two sports have been featured in the Summer Games over the years. While some sports like swimming, gymnastics and cycling are always featured, others like baseball have appeared and disappeared from the list. For individual sports, athletes typically qualify for the Olympics by obtaining a certain ranking by the International Sports Federation, or by placing in a major international event. The sports featured in the Summer Games are divided into five categories, based on popularity with the most popular being aquatic, athletic or gymnastic sports.
