SUMMER GAMES HISTORY
Today’s games were founded in 1894 by French educator and historian, Pierre de Coubertin who sought to create a place for international understanding through sporting competition. The first edition of the games was held in Athens, Greece with only 245 competitors. However, this was the largest international event ever to be organized at the time. A few years later, the Summer Games were hosted in Paris, France for the first time with four times as many athletes competing, including women who previously were not allowed to compete. From that point on, the Summer Games began to grow in competitors and attendance as the years passed. The United States is the current leader of the all-time medal table with the highest number of gold, silver and bronze medals, as well as the top-placed team of the 2016 Summer Games. What nation will lead the games in 2020? Take the vacation of a lifetime to the huge international sporting event that the whole world will be waiting to see.
