Why attend the Red River Showdown?
Every year at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, Texas, collegiate rivals the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners face off during the third weekend of the Texas State Fair in October. Named after the red river that forms part of the boundary between Texas and Oklahoma, the game is incredibly popular due to the longstanding rivalry as well as the back-and-forth victories between the teams.
RED RIVER SHOOTOUT TROPHIES
There are three trophies awarded to the winner of the game. The Golden Hat, a ten-gallon gold hat is kept by the winning school’s athletic department, the Red River Rivalry trophy is given to the team’s student government and the governors of the two states exchange the Governor’s trophy. In fact, the game is so big among the two states, there’s often a bet placed between the governors in which the loser has to present a side of beef to the winner.
Oklahoma has emerged victorious for the last two years, but the famous flip-flop nature of the competition leaves both Longhorn and Sooners fans on their toes at all times. Who will win the 2018 Red River Rivalry? Grab your ticket to the Cotton Bowl game this October and watch the historic showdown.
