El Clásico is a football match that occurs between rivals, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF. Though the term used to refer more specifically to competitions held in the Spanish Championship, it now refers to matches between these two teams in general. The matches are famous for their intensity and are considered some of the biggest club football games and most-viewed annual sporting events in the world.
The 2018-2019 LaLiga season begins on the weekend of August 18, with Clasico games between Real Madrid and Barcelona in October and March. The first Clasico of the LaLiga season will take place at Camp Nou in Barcelona on October 28 with the return fixture taking place at Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid on March 3, 2019.
Currently, Barcelona is in the lead overall with 112 wins versus Real Madrid’s 99 wins. However, Real Madrid has the lead in competitive matches with 95 wins to Barcelona’s 92.
A HISTORY OF RIVALRY
The rivalry between the two teams on the surface arises from the fact that they belong to the two largest cities in Spain. However, the rivalry can be traced back to the 1930’s and has always been heavily rooted in politics. Barcelona developed a reputation long ago of representing strong Catalan nationalism. Catalonia is a community in Spain consisting of four provinces, of which Barcelona is the largest. This sense of nationalism opposes with Real Madrid’s centralizing views and their Spanish Nationalism. Because the rivalry goes deeper than sports, the election of the club’s presidents are often deeply politicized and the sense of pride for one’s team usually goes much further than that of a typical sports rivalry. While the history behind the competitive matches brings a certain gravity to the games, it also brings the promise of an intense match that is quite unlike any other competition in sports.
