UEFA TO LAUNCH THIRD EUROPEAN CLUB COMPETITION IN 2021-22 SEASON

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE, EUROPA LEAGUE AND…

Chairman of the European Club Association (ECA), Andrea Agnelli recently announced that the green light has been given for the UEFA to introduce a third competition to the 2021-22 season. As of now, the competition only awaits approval of the UEFA Executive Committee. There are currently two existing tournaments: European football’s premier club competition, the UEFA Champions League and the second football club competition, the UEFA Europa League. This new tournament would increase the number of clubs playing on the European stage by 16, going from 80 to 96, but reduce the number of participating clubs in the Europa League from 48 to 32, making it the same as the Champions League.

THE RETURN TO 3 EUROPEAN FOOTBALL COMPETITIONS

This isn’t the first time that European football would have three continental competitions. The third competition used to be the Cup Winners’ Cup, which took place between the winners of the domestic tournaments. However, it was abolished in 1999 and the Europa League became the competition for domestic cup winners. Both the ECA and UEFA have been looking for more clubs to be involved in European competitions, and the UEFA has been trying to grow the Europa League. Bringing back three tournaments and the Europa League down to 32 participating clubs will heighten the Europa League’s competition, making it more valuable and leaving the lower ranked countries to participate in the new tournament.

Agnelli also called for “a detailed assessment of the existing international match calendar,” stating that it needs modernizing before the new model set to come in 2024.

The UEFA Champions League pits the best football clubs in the world against each other. Played midweek during the domestic league season in Europe, the Champions League is contested by each European country's top clubs. The 2019 Champions League Final will take place in Madrid, Spain. The high stakes match will be played on Saturday, June 1st. Don’t miss your chance to experience it live. EXPLORE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL TICKETS
